Earthquake awareness and being prepared
We would like to express our deepest condolences for the many precious lives lost in the Noto Peninsula Earthquake 2024 which occurred on January 1st.
We also extend our deepest sympathies to all those who were affected by the earthquake and would like to express our sincere respect to those who are working hard to provide relief to the victims and support the reconstruction of the affected area.
In Japan, an earthquake can happen anywhere and it is absolutely vital that you are as prepared as you can be.
Do you have water and food and other necessary things to last for a few days?
Everyone’s needs are different, make sure you have what your family needs.
Please take some time to check your emergency stockpile and your emergency bag.
The stockpile is for if you have to stay in your home after a disaster,
the emergency bag is what you take with you if you need to evacuate your home.
Does your kit include copies of your important documents (passport & residence card, etc)
Do you know where the nearest evacuation site is from your apartment?
Have you given your home country contact information to your employer or your embassy?
As you also might have heard on the news lately, things can disappear very quickly from the shops and it is not certain that help can come quickly.
You may have to fend for yourself for a while and better make sure you have some supplies at home.
Please spend a little time thinking about this important issue.
Remember, an earthquake can strike anywhere / anytime.
Be prepared.
The Tokyo Metropolitan Government has some excellent information about disaster preparedness in English, please have a look.
