“Innovation and Science Museums - The 8K Museum Plan - ”
Museums in Japan are now facing three obstacles:

  1. Aging of facility and exhibits
  2. Financial hardships to renew or renovate old facilities
  3. Lack of human resources to revitalize museums

As a result, number of visitor has dropped, its presence has deteriorated and this has led to the decrease in income gained from admissions charge. Museums are in need of a drastic policy change.
In times of such a crisis, we would like to draw attention to the so-called “miracle of educational museums” which pushed the number of visitors up to 660,000 in 1921 from a mere 30,000 in 1912.
This book tries to shed light on this “miracle” and propose how museums could change in view of the 5th Basic Science and Technology Policy of 2016. Interview with Mamoru Mohri, Chief Executive Director of Miraikan and Shuichi Fujisawa, Chairman of NHK Engineering System are included at the end of this book.
